Licorice Root Benefits

It’s not a Twizzler, or a Red Vine, but even better! Licorice root contains numerous potential benefits to our health.

What is licorice root?

Licorice root, commonly known as sweet root, is used as a sweetener in candies and beverages. People have also used licorice root throughout history for its medicinal benefits.

The word “licorice” refers to the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, a plant native to Europe and Asia.

Ancient Egyptians used licorice root in tea as a cure-all. It was later introduced to China and became a commonly used herb in Chinese traditional medicine.

What is licorice root DGL?

Tranont Health’s [Life] Enzyme Blend contains a form of licorice root called DGL. What is this and what is the difference between it and regular licorice root?

DGL is licorice root with the compound glycyrrhizin removed.

Glycyrrhizin is one of the main compounds of licorice that gives it its sweet flavor. People with high blood pressure or low potassium levels should avoid glycyrrhizin as it can aggravate these conditions.

Licorice root DGL, although not very sweet, is a safer form of licorice to take long-term and is recommended for gastrointestinal symptoms. DGL should contain no more than 2 percent glycyrrhizin.

Why do I need licorice root?

  • Cleanse respiratory system: Licorice root can help treat respiratory problems by increasing phlegm production. The production of healthy phlegm keeps the respiratory system functioning optimally without old mucus clogging it.
  • Soothe stomach: Licorice root is used to soothe gastrointestinal issues. Licorice root has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties that can soothe gastrointestinal issues, such as ulcers, heartburn, and food poisoning.
  • Reduce stress: Prolonged stress can leave the adrenal gland depleted by producing adrenaline and cortisol. Licorice root can provide the adrenal gland some relief and promote a healthy cortisol level in the body.
  • Protects teeth and skin: Licorice root contains antibacterial properties that can protect teeth and skin. Many holistic health practitioners recommend applying licorice root on tooth decay to kill bacteria.

Where can I find licorice root?

Licorice root can be found at health food stores and online.

Many supplements also include it, such as Tranont Health’s [Life] Enzyme Blend. [Life] contains licorice root DGL to help alleviate gastrointestinal issues.
